Scalable Recommendation Engine Development for Publicly Traded Travel Company

This client is an excellent case study in the power of strong feature selection over algorithmic novelty. The business model for this client is highly complex, with significant human involvement across their entire marketing process. To accommodate this, I interviewed team members across 6 distinct marketing units to determine the appropriate way to construct predictive features that would also allow for human overrides and feedback.

Prior to fully deploying for this business, I deployed our recommendation algorithm in a limited test environment against an out of the box alternative that was concurrently pitching my client. My algorithm beat the performance metrics handedly, a success achieved by strong feature design and efficient model selection.

Scalability and speed of the solution were also key considerations - each week, over 4TB of behavioral data has to be processed in just a few hours. To achieve this, the base recommendation algorithm was re-written as a distributed function, operating over 100 distinct processing nodes, dramatically reducing processing time and maintaining a healthy buffer for re-execution in the event of system failure.
